Gutierrez Named Pitcher of the Week

Last Sunday, Gutierrez matched the longest appearance of his career by throwing seven innings, and set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts as the Whitecaps beat the Great Lakes Loons 6-1 to take three games during a four-game series in West Michigan.
This marks the second time that Gutierrez has taken home the award, having also been given the honors back in May. It's the third time a Whitecaps pitcher has garnered the recognition this season, as
"He's a great day game pitcher," West Michigan manager Mike Rabelo told MiLB.com. "What makes him really good is the fastball he commands, and he can move it around in the zone including up in the zone. That's why he gets his strikeouts, as well."
Gutierrez, a native of Venezuela, is 9-6 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 games (18 starts) this season. In more than 112 innings of work, Gutierrez has walked only 18 batters and struck out 114. The 21-year old has allowed just 90 hits in holding opponents to a .213 batting average against. The Whitecaps pitching staff has posted the best overall ERA (2.78) in the Midwest League.
Coinciding with the honors; the Whitecaps won their 80th game, becoming the first team in Minor League Baseball to accomplish the feat.
