Hammerheads Steal Game one of the FSL Championship Series with a 9-1 Victory Over Tarpons on Sunday Afternoon

TAMPA, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads steal a victory on the road powered by a seven-run top of the ninth inning against the Tampa Tarpons by a final score of 9-1 in game one of the Florida State League Championship Series on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

It was a pitcher’s duel through the first three innings of the game between Jupiter starting pitcher Jake Clemente and Tampa starting pitcher Justin West as both teams combined to leave nine runners on base and failed to score.

The dominant starting pitching continued through the fourth and fifth innings. West finished his start with five scoreless innings and allowed five hits, two walks, one hit-by-pitch, and struck out seven batters. In two appearances against Jupiter this season, including this game, West has thrown 9 1/3 shutout innings against the Hammerheads.

Clemente went back out for the bottom of the sixth inning, which was the first time in his professional career. After a leadoff walk and a flyout, Clemente exited the game and Samuel Carpio came in to pitch for the Hammerheads. Carpio induced a double play to end the inning without a run scored.

Clemente finished with a career-high 5 1/3 shutout innings where he allowed one hit, five walks and five strikeouts in a no-decision.

In the top of the seventh inning, the scoreless tie was broken by Jupiter. Echedry Vargas drew a one-out walk to lead off the frame. The next hitter, Luis Arana, blasted an RBI double into left-center field to plate Vargas. With two outs and Arana at third base, Arana attempted to steal home, a timeout was called, and a balk was awarded by home plate umpire Jacob Gorman, which gave the Hammerheads a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Luis Escudero blasted a low line drive over the right field wall for a solo home run that shrunk Jupiter’s lead to 2-1. That was the only blemish on Caprio’s record as he tossed 2 2/3 innings where he struck out four hitters and allowed just one run.

Jupiter got the run back and then some in the top of the ninth inning. After Arana walked and stole second base, Jacob Lombard hit an RBI single into left field and advanced to second base. Eric Guevara came up next and hit another RBI single. Jupiter added two more runs on a wild pitch and an RBI walk by Carlos Sanchez. Vargas sent two more home with an RBI single to center field. Arana sent another run home when he hit a ground ball on the infield, which scored Sanchez before Vargas was tagged out on the base paths and pushed the lead to 9-1. In total, 11 men came to the plate and seven runs scored for Jupiter.

Davidxon Lara came in for the bottom of the ninth inning and retired the Tarpons in order as the Hammerheads defeated the Tarpons 9-1 in game one on Sunday afternoon.

Arana scored two runs and had an RBI to get the offense started for Jupiter. Vargas finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Lombard and Guevara each had an RBI single.

The championship series shifts to Jupiter, Florida for game two on Tuesday, September 15 with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium where the Hammerheads look for their second FSL title in franchise history and first since 2023.
