Big Third Inning Helps Hub City Snap Skid, Top Rome

Tiger tosses four hitless innings, strikes out career high

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A bounce-bat offensive effort and a shutdown start from Izack Tiger helped the Spartanburgers (11-24, 45-56) win their first game of the week against Rome (16-18, 49-49) by a 12-6 final at Fifth Third Park Saturday.

Tiger gave the Spartanburgers his best effort of the season. The Rangers’ No. 23 prospect tossed four innings and did not allow a hit. He struck out the side in consecutive innings, the second and third.

Hub City loaded the bases in the first against Cade Kuehler, and Gleider Figuereo grounded into a double play to plate Paxton Kling as the game’s first run.

The ‘Burger bats notched a crooked number in the bottom of the third. Hub City scored six runs against Kuehler (L, 9-5), all with two outs. Casey Cook was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Luke Hanson singled and Figuereo walked to load the bases, then Maxton Martin lashed a double to right to clear the bases. Marcos Torres followed with an RBI single which scored Martin. The exclamation point for Hub City was a two-run blast from Antonis Macias, which scored Torres and advanced the Spartanburgers lead to 7-1.

Tiger finished off his outing with a scoreless fourth, and Drew Christo came out of the Rome bullpen and faced the minimum in the bottom of the frame.

Both teams scored in the fifth. Rome plated three runs, all unearned, against Owen Proksch. Hub City loaded the bases against Christo and Torres brought in a run with a double play groundout. The ‘Burgers led 8-3 after the fifth.

Brock Porter took over on the mound for Hub City in the sixth and retired the side in order. Quincy Scott walloped a solo home run on the second pitch from new reliever Jacob Kroeger in the bottom of the sixth.

With a six-run lead, Porter ceded a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but the offense had his back. The Spartanburgers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth without a hit; six walks led to Kling, Cook and Hanson crossing the dish. Porter (W, 7-2) finished off the ninth without issue to finish the ‘Burgers 45th win of the season.
