PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 3, 2019) - Ronaldo Hernandez' fourth inning home run was just enough Wednesday, sinking the St. Lucie Mets and giving the Charlotte Stone Crabs a 2-1 win in front of 5,972 fans at Charlotte Sports Park.
With the game tied 1-1, Hernandez launched his sixth home run to left on the first pitch that Mets (41-41, 9-7) reliever Carlos Hernandez (1-3) threw.
From there, the Stone Crabs (46-35, 11-4) pitching staff did the rest. Stephen Woods Jr. (6-1) went 4.1 innings of one-run ball to earn the win, allowing four hits while striking out five.
Charlotte relievers Trey Cumbie and Alex Valverde combined to go the final 3.2 innings scoreless. Cumbie fanned two over 2.1 innings, while Valverde earned his second save.
The Stone Crabs jumped in front early, aided by a rain delay and the Mets defense. After shortstop Manny Rodriguez committed two fielding errors, a 46-minute rain delay ensued, knocking out St. Lucie starter Thomas Szapucki.
The first batter after the delay was Kaleo Johnson , who drove in Wander Franco with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 Charlotte.
The Mets fought back in the top of the fourth, scoring on back-to-back doubles from Cody Bohanek and Matt Winaker before Hernandez' swing decided things.
The Stone Crabs will now embark on an eight-game road trip, playing four games each with the Jupiter Hammerheads and Florida Fire Frogs. Tommy Romero (6-2, 1.86) is scheduled to start Thursday's 6 p.m. series opener in Jupiter, opposed by Jordan Holloway (2-5, 3.78)
