Salem, Virginia – The Lynchburg Hillcats (42-41) tied the game up in the eighth inning (42-41) but a solo shot from Salem Red Sox (50-34) second baseman Nick Yorke handed Lynchburg their first series loss in two weeks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lynchburg tallied first in the top of the second inning when Andres Melendez drove home Gabriel Rodriguez with an RBI single off Salem starter Bradley Blalock.
- Salem knotted the game at one in the bottom of the frame, getting a leadoff double from Nick Northcut. The run moved to third when ‘Cats starter Josh Wolf threw a wild pitch, coming home on a sacrifice fly from Alex Erro.
- The Hillcats made a pitching change in the bottom of the third, throwing out reliever Randy Labaut. After fanning Red Sox catcher Alan Marrero, Labaut gave up a solo-shot to Salem’s Nick Yorke to put the Sox up 2-1 after three innings of play.
- That’s how the score stayed until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Red Sox extended their lead to three. Angel Maita ripped an RBI double to right-center field and Jecorrah Arnold scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 Salem.
- The Hillcats tied the game at four apiece in the top of the eighth inning. The frame started with Yordys Valdes reaching on a fielding error, followed by back-to-back walks from Christian Cairo and Angel Martinez to load the bases. Valdes came home on a sac-fly to left field and Cairo scored on a single sliced by Johnathan Rodriguez. It took two fielding errors from the Red Sox to get Martinez home, with the Salem mistakes forcing a tie into the bottom of the eighth.
- The Red Sox did not stay down for long, Nick Yorke crushed a leadoff home run to left field in the bottom of the frame to put Salem back up one on his second bomb of the day.
- The Hillcats got the tying run to third in the top of the night inning, but a double play ended the game to hand Lynchburg a 5-4 loss in the series finale in Salem.
