The NICU at Beacon Children’s Hospital in South Bend is a special place for Michelle and Christopher Walden. Not only were they the first couple to get married there, it’s also become their home away from home.

Their five year old son, Elias, who has chronic lung disease and is oxygen dependent, is a frequent visitor.
“He’s our miracle kid,” says his father Christopher.
Elias has been fighting since the day he was born, requiring nebulizer treatments, a feeding tube and a tracheotomy at 3-months old. When he turned one, he also underwent open heart surgery.
To this day, Elias receives home nursing care.
“Beacon Children’s became family for us and supported us through the worst part of our lives,” said Michelle.
