Homer Barrage Falls Short in Schmidt and McMahon’s Rehab Outing

The Somerset Patriots fell to the Akron RubberDucks 6-5 in 10 innings at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ on Saturday night.

Somerset finds itself 3.5 games back of first-place Reading in the Northeast Division with 13 games remaining in the second half. The loss moved the Patriots to 5-6 against the RubberDucks this season, including a 3-2 record at TD Bank Ballpark.

Somerset clubbed four homers for the eighth time this season. It was Somerset’s only loss this season when hitting four-plus homers. All four homers were solo shots, extending a streak of seven straight runs by the Patriots being scored on solo homers dating back to Friday night’s 3-1 win. Somerset’s four solo homers were tied for the fourth-most in a single game in franchise history. They were the most since powering five solo home runs on April 29, 2025 at Richmond.

In the fifth inning, Manny Palencia and Cole Gabrielson’s homers marked the third straight game the Patriots have smashed multiple homers in a single inning and 15th multi-home run inning this season. The Patriots notched their 22nd three-plus HR game this season (15-7) and 54th multi-home run game this season (38-16). Somerset’s 54 multi-HR games are the most since the Patriots’ franchise-record 55 multi-HR games in 2023. Somerset’s 179 home runs this season lead Double-A and are tied for fifth in MiLB at the time of the game’s conclusion.

RHP Clarke Schmidt (0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB and 2 K) made his 2026 debut on MLB rehab, tossing 16 of his 20 pitches for strikes. Across seven rehab outings with Somerset dating back to 2021, Schmidt has posted a 3.18 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and .181 BAA with 31 K to 4 BB in 22.2 IP.

RHP Rory Fox (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K) made his second professional appearance in relief. Fox worked at least five innings for his fifth straight outing. In that span, he’s racked up 27 K to 6 BB in 30.0 IP.

CF Jace Avina (3-for-5) notched his first three-hit game since July 22 at New Hampshire and seventh overall this season. Avina is 8-for-23 with five RBI and three multi-hit games against Akron this week.

3B Ryan McMahon (0-for-3) played six innings at third base in his first game of MLB rehab for a left thumb sprain.

C Manny Palencia (3-for-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) belted his first career two-home run game, extending his career-high home run total to seven this season. Palencia has recorded homers in five consecutive series for the first time in his career. Prior to homering seven times in 18 August games, he’d homered once in 258 professional games. Palencia’s two-homer effort was the 17th multi-homer game by a Patriot this season and first since Gladney’s third two-homer game of the year on August 11 vs. New Hampshire. Palencia’s seven August homers are tied for second among Double-A batters with fewer than 75 plate appearances.

Palencia has reached safely in 17 of his last 18 games. During that stretch, he’s slashing .333/.366/.712 with 7 HR, 18 RBI and 11 XBH. Since the beginning of July, Palencia has 12 multi-hit games and is slashing .351/.380/.596 with 7 HR, 22 RBI and 14 XBH in 31 games. That comes after slashing .208/.288/.215 with 0 HR, 7 RBI and 1 XBH in the season’s first 46 games.

2B Connor McGinnis (1-for-4, HR, RBI, R) became the ninth Patriot to homer at least 10 times with Somerset this season. McGinnis homered for the second time in his last five games and fourth time in August. Since his first Double-A home run on June 16, McGinnis is slashing .255/.342/.469 with 10 HR, 33 RBI and 20 XBH in 56 games.

LF Cole Gabrielson (2-for-4, HR, RBI, 2 R) homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Gabrielson’s homer signaled his career-high tying sixth across all levels this season. Gabrielson extended his hit streak to five games. In that stretch, he’s 7-for-18 (..389 AVG) with 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 XBH and 2 BB.
