Humphreys Shines, Curry Homers in Missions Friday Night Win 

SAN ANTONIO – Terrific pitching and timely hitting was the deadly combination for the San Antonio Missions Friday night. They defeated the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 4-0.

Following Thursday night’s rain out, the Missions returned to action against the Springfield Cardinals. Jordan Humphreys made the start against Andre Pallante.

After two scoreless innings, the Missions offense struck first in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a two-out rally. Eguy Rosario started the rally with a single. Ben Ruta reached on a catcher’s interference. Jose Azocar drove in both runners with a double off the left field wall. San Antonio gained a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Missions outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton was replaced by Michael Curry after the second inning. On a fly ball down the left field line, Rosario and Williams-Sutton converged with Rosario catching the ball. Rosario appeared to step on Williams-Sutton's leg while he was attempting to make the play.

San Antonio added to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Allen Cordoba was the lead-off batter and drew a walk. On a 3-0 count, Curry launched a 423-foot home run over the left field wall. For Curry, it was his third home run of the year and increased their lead to 4-0.

Humphreys, the Missions starter, had his longest outing since June 30th, 2017. The right-hander tossed five shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out five batters.

The Missions bullpen pitched out of bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning. James Reeves was the new pitcher to begin the inning. He walked the first two batters he faced. After recording two outs, he loaded the bases after hitting Nick Plummer. Nick Kuzia relieved Reeves and struck out the final batter of the inning.

The pitching matchup for game two will be Osvaldo Hernandez (2-6, 4.92) for the Missions against Dalton Roach (5-5, 5.27) for Springfield.
