KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 26, 2017) - Trailing 2-1 into the eighth inning, the Intimidators scored six runs capped by a three-run home run by Zach Remillard and defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-2 on Saturday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (27-35 Second Half, 66-64) defeated Lakewood at home for the first time this season. Previously the I's were 0-5.
The offensive onslaught began with one away in the bottom of the eighth as an error by shortstop Raul Rivas on a pop-up put Evan Skoug on second base. Up next, Luis González tripled off the right field wall scoring Skoug and tying the score. Alex Call followed Gonzalez with a single through the left side giving the Intimidators their first lead at 3-2.
Moments later after Call stole second base, a single to left by Jake Burger scored the runner and made it a 4-2 Kannapolis lead, as Gavin Sheets succeeded Burger with a single to center putting two aboard. Both Burger and Sheets finished the night 2-for-4.
Two batters later with two outs Remillard's home run over the left-field fence, his seventh of the season, gave Kannapolis a 7-2 lead. Remillard closed the night 2-for-4 with four RBI.
In total, the Intimidators sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth and scored six runs on five hits.
Danny Dopico (4-4) earned the win out of the bullpen, striking out five in two scoreless frames while walking three and not allowing a hit. Starting pitcher Luis Martinez took no decision improving his unbeaten streak to eight consecutive starts while tossing his seventh quality start of the season. Martinez allowed two runs on six hits in six innings while walking three and striking out four.
Lakewood reliever Addison Russ (1-2) suffered the loss allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits in one inning, spoiling a seven-inning nine-strikeout performance from starter Felix Paulino who retired the final 10 batters that he faced.
Kannapolis concludes a six-game homestand on Sunday night with the final game of a three-game series against Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. as the Intimidators send to the mound RHP Yelmison Peralta (3-3, 4.14 ERA) against BlueClaws RHP Adonis Medina (4-9, 3.23 ERA). Sunday is the final home game of the regular season and gates open at 4 p.m. It is also Fan Appreciation Day with Picnic in the Park (all-you-can-eat for only $10).
