San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino (playing as their MILB Copa de Diversion identity Los Cucuys de San Bernardino) downed the Rancho Cucamonga (Temblores) Quakes 4-3 in ten innings on Thursday. The win earned the Sixers (10-11) a split of the four-game set with the Quakes (12-9).
The Quakes took a lead in the first inning when Jeter Downs singled off 66ers starter Oliver Ortega to open the game. He stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Donovan Casey's infield hit. Ortega then struck out the next seven batters in a row. In the third Ortega walked Downs with one out and Downs stole second and third before coming home on a sac fly from Connor Wong and 2-0 lead. Alvaro Rubalcaba singled for the Sixers in the bottom of the first against RC starter Victor Gonzalez and moved to second on walk to Ryan Scott. Torii Hunter Jr. got the Sixers on the board with a RBI single. The Quakes, who stole eight bases in the game, led 3-1 into the fifth when Kevin Williams Jr. Jr.'s RBI single shaved it to 3-2. In the sixth Jordan Zimmerman tripled with one out and Inland Empire's Zane Gurwitz singled him home to tie the game. Erik Manoah Jr. Jr. (1-0) pitched a perfect tenth to set up the 66ers walk-off in the home half. Quakes' southpaw (their fifth lefty of the night on the mound) walked Ryan Vega with ball four being a wild pitch moving the automatic runner at second to third (Williams) with no outs. Kyle Survance Jr. then lifted a fly ball to right-center that fell for a base hit easily scoring Williams and securing the win. The Sixers pitching staff fanned 17 batters as Ortega (4IP, 9Ks), Brett Hanewich (2IP, 2Ks), Jorge Tavarez (3IP, 5Ks) and Manoah (1IP, 1K). Austin Hamilton (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Quakes who struck out 16 66ers. Torii Hunter Jr. finished with three hits, a walk, RBI and stolen base for IE.
