Durham advances to first place with win

(Durham, NC) – The Durham Bulls (53-43) got the best of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (52-44) on Thursday evening as they won 5-3.

Ali Castillo gave Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as he hit a sacrifice fly against Keven Herget (8-1) to score Rafael Marchan. Grant Witherspoon and Vidal Brujan hit solo home runs against Michael Plassmeyer (2-2) in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ruben Cardenas hit a home run against Plassmeyer in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend Durham’s lead to 3-1.

Jonathan Aranda homered against Mark Appel in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Bulls a 4-1 lead. The ‘Pigs were able to cut Durham’s lead to 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning against Phoenix Sanders as Dalton Guthrie hit a solo home run and Castillo hit an RBI single that scored Will Toffey.

Nick Duron allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Cardenas scored on a bases-loaded walk by Joe Hudson. The run allowed the Bulls to take a 5-3 lead.

Javy Guerra earned his sixth save of the season as he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The IronPigs and Bulls will play again on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
