Allentown, Pennsylvania (April 19, 2023) – A seven-run third inning fueled a 12-10 win for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (6-10) over the Worcester Red Sox (7-9) on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the IronPigs exploded. Weston Wilson smoked a solo homer to rightfield, his fourth of the season, to make it 1-0. Scott Kingery brought in another with an RBI triple with John Hicks followed with an RBI single. After a flyout, a single and walk loaded the bases before Esteban Quiroz walked to force home a run. Dalton Guthrie drew another bases loaded walk to plate a run before Wilson drove in two more with a double to cap the frame.
Jhailyn Ortiz added on in the fourth, ripping a two-run homer, his first of the year, pushing the IronPigs lead to 10-0.
Simon Muzziotti extended the lead out to 11-0 as he brought home a run with a base hit in the fifth.
Worcester started a late charge in the sixth as Ryan Fitzgerald drove home two with a base hit. The momentum continued for the WooSox in the eighth as Marcus Wilson plated a run on a fielder’s choice. Back-to-back walks forced home a run before Bobby Dalbec blasted a grand slam, his second homer of the year, to make it 11-8.
Jim Haley doubled with two away in the eighth and Guthrie then doubled him home to provide the IronPigs with a crucial insurance run.
Wilson drilled a two-run homer in the ninth for Worcester, his first homer of the season, but it was too little, too late, as the IronPigs held on for the 12-10 win.
Jakob Hernandez (1-1) was credited with the win for the IronPigs, going 1.1 no-hit innings, allowing two runs on three walks, striking out two.
James Paxton (0-2) took the loss for the WooSox, allowing seven runs in two-thirds of an inning on five hits and two walks without recording a strikeout.
John Hicks produced the first four-hit game of the season for the IronPigs, going 4-for-5 with a double, RBI, and two runs.
