Jackets hold on for 5-3 victory

Columbia, SC– After dropping the previous four games, the GreenJackets sent their ace to the mound to end the skid, and Spencer Strider did just that. On get away day, the GreenJackets beat the Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City Royals) by a final score of 5-3.

The win gets Augusta to 10-14 on the season as they get set to return home on Tuesday night for the start of a 12-game home stand.

Strider took the bump and delivered four innings of baseball. He allowed his first run of the season in the second inning on a Tyler Tolbert sacrifice fly. The scoreless inning streak ended at 12.1 frames. He ended the day with six strikeouts. The right-hander now has a whopping ERA of 0.59.

With Augusta trailing 1-0, Willie Carter singled to score Landon Stephens in the fourth, and we were tied at one. Carter went 2-for-3 on the day. It was his 7th multi-hit contest of the year.

In the 6th, Vaughn Grissom hit his first home run of the season. The solo shot put the Jackets in front at 2-1.

Ben Thompson pitched two scoreless innings, striking-out three. Thompson went on to get the win, his second of the year.

The GreenJackets offense tallied three in the 9th, all thanks to three bases loaded walks. Brandon Parker, Cam Shepherd, and Cade Bunnell collected RBI's thanks to their patient approaches. The Jackets led 5-1 heading to the home-half.

Columbia scored one on a throwing error, and added another run when Diego Hernandez singled. Brady McConnell came to the plate as the tying run with two outs, but had the bat taken out of his hands when Hernandez was caught trying to steal second base. The Jackets held on for the win, 5-3.

• Willie Carter raised his batting average to .329 with his two hits Sunday.
• Vaughn Grissom's home run was the fourth of his professional career.
• Ben Thompson's 1.29 ERA is the best among all GreenJackets relievers. He's also pitched the most innings (14.0) of any Jackets reliever.
