*North Augusta, SC* – The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) scored the final six runs, but the Charleston RiverDogs (34-19, 61-58) were just able to hold on in a rain-soaked thriller at SRP Park. The GreenJackets (23-29, 54-64) trailed 8-1 at the game’s midpoint, mounting a furious rally but falling just one run short in an 8-7 final.

Seth Keller got the start for Augusta, making his first appearance against the RiverDogs since his combined no-hitter back on July 28th. Ryan Cermak singled home the game’s first run after just two batters, as Keller was forced to work out of some early trouble on the basepaths. The GreenJackets evened the game at one in the third, when Cam Magee socked an RBI single to score Tyler Collins, who led off the inning with a triple.

Disaster struck in the very next frame, though, as the RiverDogs tagged Keller for three runs. Nolan Martinez entered to wrap up the fourth and stranded two men aboard, but the next inning saw more of the same as the RiverDogs added four more to take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, a large bank of ominous storm clouds began to surround the stadium, setting the sky alight with a dark purple glow as lightning fired off in the distance. It’s no coincidence that the weather jolted Augusta into action, as they began to storm back furiously. Jace Grady doubled home a pair of runs with two men out in the sixth, before Drew Compton brought him home as Augusta chipped away to make it an 8-4 game.

Zack Austin dealt two scoreless frames from the sixth to the seventh, and Landon Harper pitched a scoreless eighth. Rain began to cascade down over SRP Park but the GreenJackets again were undeterred. Augusta loaded the bases with two outs, before a wild pitch scored E.J. Exposito. Tyler Collins fell behind in the count, but stung a two-strike double to clear the bases and bring Augusta within one at 8-7. Harper retired the side in the ninth, but Augusta could not reach against Charleston’s Jack Hartman, and the comeback spark ended in defeat.

Augusta wraps up the 2023 home slate from now until September 3rd! The GreenJackets take on the Charleston RiverDogs and the Salem Red Sox over the next ten days.
