Jimmy Burnette capped off the Mahoning Valley Scrappers big Day 3 at the MLB Amateur Draft as the fifth pitcher and sixth player drafted from the team. The Toronto Blue Jays took him in the 18th Round with the 542nd pick.
During his time with the Scrappers he posted a 3.09 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched. He dominated his Draft League competition striking out 44 and only letting them bat a combined .221 against him.
Burnette sports a five pitch mix. His arsenal consists of a fastball, curveball, slider, changeup and cutter. Burnette has a pretty high Whiff% on his fastball (33%), curveball (80%) and slider (52.5%) (Prep Baseball Report). His velocity is decent with his fastball typically around 93 MPH and sometimes hitting 95 MPH.
Burnette attended Illinois for three years before transferring to Saint Leo University. While his ERA wasn’t very good at a 5.76, his strikeout numbers were very high (Baseball Reference). He mowed down 53 batters in 45.1 innings.
After standing out in the MLB Draft League Burnette hopes to stand out north of the border with the Toronto Blue Jays.
