Salisbury, MD - Kyle Johnston threw six shutout innings and Jake Scudder hit his fourth homer of the season in the Hagerstown Suns' 5-0 win on Monday night over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Suns improve to 1-3 in the second half and 28-44 overall with the two teams finishing their three-game series on Tuesday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.

The Suns took a lead in the first inning against Delmarva starter Chris Tillman, who was on a Major League rehab assignment. With one out, Nick Choruby singled and was picked off but Luis Garcia doubled to center and scored when Omar Meregildo doubled to left, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead. Meregildo scored shortly after, with Scudder singling to right and giving the Suns a 2-0 advantage.
Hagerstown added to their lead against Shorebirds reliever DL Hall in sixth. Choruby reached on an error and Garcia bunted him into scoring position to start off the inning. With two outs, Scudder launched his fourth homer of the season to right, driving in a pair of runs and extending the Suns lead to 4-0.
Johnston controlled the game for nearly all of his six innings, scattering two Shorebirds hits over his first five innings of work. In his final inning, the Shorebirds collected three hits and had runners at second and third base with two outs, but Johnston was able to get Branden Becker to ground out, preserving the shutout. The Suns added a run in the eighth and went on to win the ballgame 5-0.
Johnston (1-2) turned in a quality start after throwing six scoreless innings, allowing five hits with four strikeouts in a win. Carlos Acevedo threw one inning and allowed one hit with a strikeout. Jared Johnson worked two innings with out allowing a run or a hit with a strikeout and one walk.
Notes: Johnston threw his first quality start of the season… His six innings pitches is a career-high… It was also his first career win… Three of Scudder's four home runs have been off of left-handed pitching… He also had his fifth multi-hit and multi-RBI games… Garcia had his 21st multi-hit game of the year… He leads the team in multi-hit efforts… The Suns complete their three-game series against the Shorebirds on Tuesday with a 7:05 PM first pitch… Hagerstown will send RHP Jackson Tetreault (1-6, 5.37 ERA) against Delmarva RHP John Peluffo (0-3, 10.59 ERA).
