PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (June 28, 2017) - Spencer Jones went four shutout innings in his Charlotte Stone Crabs debut, but Charlotte's ninth inning comeback came up short in a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees Wednesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
Jones allowed only two hits and a walk while fanning three over his career-high four frames. He was promoted to the team Tuesday.
The Stone Crabs' (3-3, 34-40) starter Tyler Brashears (2-1) also pitched well, allowing two runs on two hits over five innings. He struck out two and walked three in his first start in exactly one month.
Yankees (5-1, 44-32) starting pitcher Brody Koerner (4-1) spun 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball, limiting the Stone Crabs to just five hits and one walk. He struck out four.
Charlotte trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth before mounting a comeback against Tampa reliever Andrew Schwaab. Brett Sullivan singled to right before Ryan Boldt walked. After a fielder's choice put runners at the corners, David Rodríguez grounded out to score Sullivan and make the score 2-1. A walk then put men at the corners with two outs before Thomas Milone grounded out to end the game and give Schwaab his third save.
Milone was the only Stone Crab with multiple hits. Charlotte has been held to just 10 hits in the first two games of the series after scoring 39 games in their previous series against St. Lucie.
The Stone Crabs will look to salvage the finale of the three-game set Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Travis Ott (3-1, 3.33) makes the start for Charlotte against Ian Clarkin (3-4, 2.87) of Tampa. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
