Fresno, CA (Monday, July 4) – In front of a July 4th sellout crowd of 11,302, the Fresno Grizzlies (46-30, 5-5) fell to the San Jose Giants (46-30, 6-4) 4-1 Monday night at Chukchansi Park. It was the Grizzlies first home defeat to open a series (12-2 overall) and sixth straight loss to the Giants.

San Jose sprinted ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. Riley Mahan powered a double to left-center, notching Aeverson Arteaga. Then, a Yorlis Rodriguez sacrifice fly and a Fresno fielding error plated the other two runs. The Grizzlies cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second after a Braxton Fulford RBI single to left. In the eighth, the Giants concluded the scoring with another sacrifice fly.

Fresno starter Jarrod Cande (3-2) was tagged the setback after five innings of three-run ball (two earned). Cande permitted six hits and struck out a career-high seven. Luis Amoroso added two scoreless frames and Tyler Ras fanned a pair over one-plus innings of work.

Giants’ righty Nick Sinacola (5-5) tossed five innings, earning the win. Sinacola allowed one run on four hits while punching out five. A trio of relievers followed Sinacola with four shutout frames. Esmerlin Vinicio and Julio Rodriguez picked up holds while Hunter Dula secured his fifth save of 2022. The clubs will enjoy an off day on Tuesday before returning to battle on Wednesday.
