Jacksonville, Fla. - Despite an early lead courtesy of an Austin Allen home run, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp dropped Friday’s series opener 9-2, to the Worcester Woo Sox in front 7,570 at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Jacksonville (39-46, 8-5) got on the board first when Allen (19) notched a home run in the bottom of the second inning off starter Kyle Barraclough (4-0).
Worcester (46-40, 7-4) then put up a four-spot in the top of the third inning. Nick Sogard singled, David Hamilton walked, and Ceddanne Rafaela was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Enmanuel Valdez (8), who hit a grand slam off starter Jeff Lindgren (6-4) to give the Woo Sox a 4-1 advantage.
In the home half of the third inning, the Jumbo Shrimp cut into the deficit when Jake Mangum laced a one-out single. Mangum then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a balk.
Valdez singled with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Bobby Dalbec (21) hit a two-run shot followed by a Wilyer Abreu (12) homer to widen the gap to 7-2.
The WooSox extended their lead in the top of the eighth inning. Valdez walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Dalbec single. Valdez scored on a wild pitch. Following a fly out, Dalbec scored on a fielding error making it, 9-2.
Jacksonville and Worcester continue their series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. LHP Devin Smeltzer (4-4, 5.67) gets the nod for the Jumbo Shrimp and RHP Dinelson Lamet (0-0, 4.50) starts for the WooSox. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on Bally Live, MiLB.tv., ESPN 690, and espn690.com.
On National Give Something Away Day, the first 2,000 fans to Saturday’s game will receive a Vice Shrimp beach blanket courtesy of Ascension St. Vincent’s. Fans are encouraged to stick around after the game for Saturday Night Fireworks.
