COLUMBUS, Ohio – Garrett Hampson lashed three hits and reached base four times on Tuesday, but the Columbus Clippers outed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 11-3 from Huntington Park.
The Clippers (54-64, 21-23) jumped out in front from the very beginning of the game. With two outs in the bottom of the first, José Tena doubled before scoring on a Johnathan Rodriguez base hit. Jhonkensy Noel then blasted a two-run home run off Jumbo Shrimp (57-63, 25-21) starter Daniel Castano (3-1) to make it 3-0.
Angel Martinez and Raynel Delgado each singled to start the second before Chris Roller walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Bryan Lavastida lifted a sacrifice fly. An error then plated two more runs and Rodriguez followed by crushing a two-run bomb to widen the gap to 8-0.
The score remained that way until the fifth. Jerar Encarnacion and Charles Leblanc each walked to begin the frame. An Xavier Edwards single off reliever Jason Bilous (3-2) loaded the bases with nobody out. Jacksonville, though, was only able to muster one run out of the threat on a double play ground ball.
With the score still 8-1, Daniel Schneemann doubled and Lavastida homered to start the seventh. After a pair of ground outs, Noel walked. George Valera and Martinez each notched a base hit, with the latter bringing home Noel to widen the gap to 11-1.
In the ninth inning, Edwards and Jacob Amaya each drew a free pass. Hampson singled and Jorge Alfaro was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Dane Myers followed with a sacrifice fly to set the final margin at 11-3.
Jacksonville looks to bounce back in Wednesday’s 6:15 p.m. first pitch. RHP Edward Cabrera (2-1, 2.04 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against Clippers RHP Peyton Battlefield (0-4, 5.80 ERA). Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN 690 and www.ESPN690.com.
