For the first time in 614-days, the Jupiter Hammerheads were back in action. The Hammerheads opened their 2021 campaign on the road against the St. Lucie Mets Tuesday night. After leading early, Jupiter ultimately fell 13-3 in their season opener.
Starter Eury Perez, the Miami Marlins No. 25 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, started off strong in his professional debut. The Dominican Republic native’s outing was highlighted by his high-90s fastball. Perez’s debut was over after three innings pitched, where he allowed one run and four hits while collecting four strikeouts.
Second baseman Osiris Johnson jumpstarted the offense in the third inning with a 2-run home run. The Marlins No.30 prospect also flashed his speed and stole a base in the game. However, the Mets quickly responded and scored 13 unanswered runs between the third and eighth innings. The Hammerheads would not get another run across until the ninth inning when Dalvy Rosario hit a solo homer.
JD Orr, the starting center fielder, also had a strong start to the season. The 24-year-old went 2-3 with a double and scored a run. Shortly after the game, the lefty was called-up to Triple-A Jacksonville. OF Javeon Cody was called up from Extended Spring Training to fill-out the Jupiter roster.
On the mound, reliever Jackson Rose impressed in 2.1 innings pitched. The Nebraska native tallied five strikeouts without earning a run. The pitching staff accounted for 12 total strikeouts in the season opener.
Jupiter will look to bounce back Wednesday afternoon when they play game two of this six-game series against St. Lucie. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10pm
