DUNEDIN, Fla. (July 24, 2022) – Keoni Cavaco continued his hot hitting Sunday, leading the Mighty Mussels to a doubleheader sweep of the Dunedin Blue Jays at TD Ballpark.

Cavaco hit home runs in both games of the doubleheader, going 6-for-11 with a walk and 5 RBI in the series.

His two-run shot in the first inning of Game 1 put the Mussels (51-34, 10-11) up 2-0 before the game was suspended. Upon the resumption of the game, Mike Paredes tossed 5.1 innings of work, allowing one earned run while striking out three.

However, Dunedin chipped away and tied the game at 3-3 after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Nelson Roberto was hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a groundout. With two outs, Cavaco looped a game-winning base hit to left to give Fort Myers a 4-3 lead. The Mussels tacked on insurance runs in the sixth on a Carlos Aguiar single and a Dunedin error.

In Game 2, Travis Adams spun 4.2 innings of one-run ball, fanning five without walking anyone.

The Mussels jumped in front in the first when Misael Urbina tripled and came around to score on a Cavaco single.

Cavaco extended the lead in the top of the third, cranking a long home run over the wall in left field.

In the bottom of the inning, the D-Jays were able to battle back with base hits by Estiven Machado and Gabby Martinez to cut the margin to 2-1.

Mussels’ reliever Niklas Rimmel (3-1) was able to stem the tide, escaping a jam in the fifth before tossing a scoreless sixth inning.

With Fort Myers still up 2-1 in the top of the sixth, Mikey Perez ripped a solo home run to left to make it 3-1.

That run proved necessary. Samuel Perez allowed a run to score in the seventh before Johnathan Lavallee notched the save by getting Rainer Nunez to ground out with the tying run at third.

After sweeping their weekend series, the Mussels will enjoy an off day on Monday before returning to Hammond Stadium for a seven-game series with the Tampa Tarpons. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
