SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Lancaster JetHawks scored four runs in the top of the first but couldn't hold off the Inland Empire 66ers in a 14-7 loss on Tuesday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Garrett Hampson doubled and scored on a Yonathan Daza triple to begin the game. The JetHawks (1-5, 39-37) added three more runs and four more hits, scoring four runs in the first inning for the second-straight day.
The 66ers (4-2, 34-42) scored twice in the bottom of the first before taking the lead in the third. With the JetHawks up, 4-2, Troy Montgomery blasted a two-run home run against Trey Killian (6-3) to give the 66ers the lead.
Lancaster responded with two runs in the third inning, but appeared to squander an opportunity for more. Inland Empire starter Luis Pena walked the first three batters of the inning to load the bases. With one out, Collin Ferguson hit a pop up to the left side of the infield, and it dropped to score a run when shortstop Connor Justus lost it in the twilight sky. The umpires did not apply the infield fly rule. Hampson later added a run-scoring infield hit.
Inland Empire took the lead right back with a three run third inning. Killian allowed eight runs on eight hits over three innings.
Winston Lavandier (4-2) took over for Pena in the fifth inning and pitched two scoreless innings. The 66er bullpen combined to allow just one run over the final five innings.
Wes Rogers went 3-for-3 and reached base five times in the game. He's reached base safely in eight of 10 plate appearances in the series.
Yonathan Daza went 2-for-4 to record his team-leading 32nd multi-hit game in 66 games played this season.
The loss was Lancaster's sixth in its last seven games, dropped the club to 1-5 in the second half (39-37 overall), and marked the fifth loss in a game in which the JetHawks led by at least four runs.
The series continues on Wednesday morning at San Manuel Stadium. Jesus Tinoco (5-1) will start for the JetHawks against Austin Robichaux (2-3). First pitch is 11 a.m.
