Delgado’s Three-Run Double Sparks Comeback Bid

The Space Cowboys’ seven-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night as Sugar Land (26-9, 58-51) dropped a 7-6 decision to the Albuquerque Isotopes (17-18, 56-54) in a back-and-forth matchup at Isotopes Park.

Albuquerque jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. After a one-out walk put a runner on base, Zac Veen connected for his 21st home run of the season to give the Isotopes an early 2-0 advantage. Albuquerque widened its lead in the third inning when a solo home run, moving ahead 3-0 after three frames. .

Sugar Land cut into the deficit in the fourth inning as Shay Whitcomb singled to extend his on-base streak before CJ Alexander launched a two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Isotopes answered back in the sixth inning after an error and a single put two runners on base. Bryant Betancourt followed with a three-run home run, extending Albuquerque’s lead to 6-2.

RHP Christian Roa kept the Isotopes off the board in the seventh inning, tossing a scoreless frame while allowing just one hit and throwing 11 of his 16 pitches for strikes.

The Space Cowboys battled back in the eighth inning, putting together a four-run rally to even the game. Alexander worked a walk before Jake Meyers smashed a ground-rule double to put two runners in scoring position. Lucas Spence followed with an RBI single to bring home Sugar Land’s first run of the inning. After Cavan Biggio drew a walk to load the bases, Raynel Delgado delivered a three-run double, tying the game at six apiece.

However, Albuquerque regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Ritter opened the inning with a hustle double before advancing to third on a bunt, giving the Isotopes runners on the corners with no outs. Adael Amador followed with an RBI groundout to give the Isotopes a 7-6 advantage.

In the top of the ninth inning, Whitcomb reached on an error, but a strikeout, pop out and caught stealing ended the Sugar Land rally and handed them their first loss since July 26.

NOTABLE:

  • The Space Cowboys' seven-game winning streak, which dated back to July 28 against Salt Lake, came to an end on Wednesday night. The streak was Sugar Land's longest of the season and tied for the longest winning streak by any team in the Pacific Coast League in 2026.
  • CJ Alexander extended his RBI streak to four games on Wednesday night, connecting on a two-run home run. Alexander has recorded an RBI in each game he has played since being reinstated from the injured list on July 30. Since returning from injury, Alexander 5-for-15 with a double, two home runs, seven RBI, two walks and four runs scored.
  • RHP Brandon McPherson tossed 5.0 innings in his third start against Albuquerque this season, marking his longest outing against the Isotopes in 2026.
  • Raynel Delgado went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI on Wednesday night, extending his hitting streak to five games and his RBI streak to four games. Over his last five games, Delgado is batting .429 (9-for-21) with three doubles, a triple, six RBI, two walks and three runs scored.
  • Shay Whitcomb has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games since the All-Star break and is currently riding a 17-game on-base streak and an eight-game hitting streak after going 1-for-5 with a run scored on Wednesday night. During his on-base streak, Whitcomb is batting .373 (25-for-67) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 15 RBI, three walks and 10 runs scored.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys continue their series against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Thursday afternoon. RHP Jason Alexander is scheduled to start for Sugar Land, while RHP Eiberson Castellano is expected to take the ball for Albuquerque. First pitch is set for 1:05 pm CT.
