COLUMBUS, Ga., — The Columbus Clingstones (5-6) surged back to tie the game in the eighth inning and attempted another spirited charge in the 10th inning, but their comeback effort fell 90 feet short in a 4-3 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (9-3) on Thursday night.
Decisive Plays: After three scoreless innings opened the game, Kemp Alderman helped put Pensacola on the board in the fourth by forcing a throwing error from Clingstones catcher Jason Delay on a stolen base attempt, resulting in Joe Mack scoring for the Blue Wahoos. Jake Thompson plated another Pensacola run with an RBI single to make it 2-0 in the sixth. Columbus rallied to tie the game in the eighth with an RBI triple by Geraldo Quintero and an RBI groundout from Kobe Kato.
Pensacola scored twice in the tenth inning on an RBI single from Johnny Olmstead and a sac bunt from Dalvy Rosario that scored Olmstead from second base after the Clingstones' second throwing error. An RBI single by Ethan Workinger got Columbus back within a run in the 10th, but the Clingstones stranded the tying run at third base as Josh Ekness (W, 1-0) struck out the next three batters to hand Columbus the loss.
Key Contributors: Workinger (3-for-4, 2B, RBI), Quintero (1-for-4, 3B, RBI), and Kato had the RBIs for Columbus. Lucas Braun (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) worked his second quality start of the season. Pensacola got a big night from Mack (3-for-5, 2 2B) and 5.2 scoreless innings from starter Evan Fitterer.
Noteworthy: Both Carlos Rodriguez and David McCabe saw their respective streaks snapped, as Rodriguez went 0-for-4 to snap a nine-game hitting streak and McCabe went 0-for-4 to snap a nine-game on-base streak. Workinger recorded the first outfield assist in Clingstones history in the tenth inning, throwing out Sam Praytor at the plate from right field. Columbus falls to 1-2 in extra-inning games.
