Late Surge Sends Mussels Past Hammerheads 4-3 in Ten

JUPITER, Fla. (July 5, 2023) – Gabriel Yanez tossed three scoreless innings in relief and the Mighty Mussels rallied for two runs in the top of the tenth to beat the Jupiter Hammerheads 4-3 in 10 innings at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Yanez struck out five batters over three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit to keep the game scoreless. He’s now fanned 49 batters against just five walks in 33.1 innings this season.
In a tie game in the top of the tenth, Mikey Perez laid down a bunt to move the automatic runner to third. Jupiter (40-36, 5-5) pitcher Dale Stanavich (0-1) spiked the throw into right field, allowing the run to score and Perez to go to third. Two batters later, Maddux Houghton ripped a double down the third base line to put Fort Myers (39-38, 5-6) in front 4-2.
The Hammerheads grabbed a run in the bottom of the tenth, but Ricardo Velez (1-0) got Chase Luttrell to ground out and seal the win.
Mussels’ starter Ben Ethridge tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. The Twins’ 15th round pick tossed a career-high 79 pitches to keep Jupiter in check.
Both teams failed to score in the first two innings until Dylan Neuse singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. The next batter was Gregory Duran, who pulled an RBI single into right to make it 1-0 Fort Myers.
In the bottom of the inning, Brett Roberts walked and reached third on a stolen base and throwing error. Ethridge then uncorked a wild pitch to plate Roberts and tie the game 1-1.
Still tied in the bottom of the fifth, Sam Praytor chopped a double down the left field before Roberts singled him to third. The next batter was Jordan McCants, who bounced out to second to plate Prayton and put Jupiter in front 2-1.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth, Ricardo Olivar singled to center with two outs. After Danny De Andrade walked, Carson McCusker lined a single to left to plate Olivar and tie the game 2-2.
Fort Myers will look to extend their winning streak to three on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Jarrett Whorff (2-0, 1.63) will make his first professional start for the Mussels, opposed by RHP Ike Buxton (2-0, 2.00) of Jupiter.
