Roberto ‘Chapo’ Vizcarra jugó la mayor parte del tiempo en la segunda base, era un buen robador de bases, pero será recordado principalmente por su poder y bateo oportuno, cualidades que lo llevaron a la inmortalidad al ser entronizado al Salón de la Fama del Beisbol Mexicano como parte de la generación 2023.
Debutó en la LMB en 1986 con los Bravos de León, con quienes se mantuvo hasta 1991. También fue parte de los Industriales de Monterrey (1992-1994), Rieleros de Aguascalientes (1994-1999), Tigres Capitalinos/Tigres de la Angelópolis (1999-2003) y Piratas de Campeche (2004-2008).
Fue cuatro veces campeón en la LMB: en 1990 con los Bravos de León, en 2000 y 2001 con los Tigres Capitalinos y 2004 con los Piratas de Campeche.
Lideró la LMB en dobletes en 1991 con 49, cifra con la que empató el récord de más hits dobles conectados en una temporada, marca aún vigente que comparte con Vinicio Garcia, de los Sultanes de Monterrey en 1961.
‘Chapo’ Vizcarra, nacido el 26 de mayo de 1967 en San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, es tercero en la historia en dobles con 482, detrás de Ricardo Sáenz (496) y Jesús Sommers (488).
Es quinto en imparables en todos los tiempos en la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol con 2,648, empatado con Daniel Fernández; sólo detrás de Jesús Sommers (3,004), Nelson Barrera (2,937), Luis Arredondo (2,815) y Héctor Espino (2,752).
Aparece en el séptimo lugar de todos los tiempos en carreras anotadas con 1,478, detrás de Daniel Fernández (1,837), Luis Arredondo (1,646), Matías Carrillo (1,535), Alejandro Ortiz (1,509), Héctor Espino (1,505) y Nelson Barrera (1,485).
Además de toda esa explosión ofensiva, ‘Chapo’ Vizcarra se daba tiempo para robar bases: las 235 almohadillas que se robó lo ubican en el sitio 15 de toda la historia.
Luego de 23 temporadas en la LMB se retiró con un promedio de bateo de .302, conectó 2,648 hits, 482 dobles, 232 cuadrangulares, produjo 1,172 carreras y se robó 235 bases en 2,292 encuentros.
En su debut como manager llevó a los Tigres de Quintana Roo al título en 2013. Hasta el momento acumula cuatro títulos (2013 y 2015 con Tigres; 2018.1 y 2022 con Leones), para ser tercero en todos los tiempos, sólo detrás de los siete de Lázaro Salazar y los seis de Benjamín ‘Cananea’ Reyes.
