BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons were only able to scratch across four singles tonight against the Chattanooga Lookouts, one in the first inning by Nick Basto, one in the second by Cleuluis Rondon, and back to back base knocks in the seventh inning by Hunter Jones and Jeff Gelalich.
Lookouts starting pitcher Fernando Romero tossed six innings full without giving up a run, and allowed just two hits on 98 pitches while surrendering two walks and striking out eight Barons batters in his fourth win of the season.
Chattanooga jumped out in front right from the start, plating a run in the very first inning after a single and a walk set the stage for Ryan Strausborger to bring home a run on a double to left field. The visiting side scored again in the second when Levi Michael led off the frame with a single and subsequent steal of second base before promptly being brought around to score on a Nick Gordon RBI single.
That would be more than enough offense for the Lookouts, who added to their lead with a run in the fifth, three more tallies in the sixth, and a five run rally to add to their total in the top of the ninth. Ian Hamilton was able to bridge the gap for the Barons between scoring innings for their opponent, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, while only giving up one hit, one walk, and fanning three batters.
Matt Cooper started the game for the Barons and lasted five innings, slinging 93 pitches and allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits and struck out four Lookouts and walking two. Cooper took the loss to move to 1-4 on the campaign.
The Barons will be back in action Wednesday night against Chattanooga again, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Michael Kopech will be on the mound for the Barons and LHP Stephen Gonsalves will get the ball for the Lookouts. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action starting with the Coca-Cola pregame show starting at 6:55 p.m. on WERC 105.5 FM and the iHeart Radio app.
