PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (August 7, 2017) - Charlotte starter Eduar Lopez turned in eight scoreless innings to lead the Stone Crabs to a 5-0 shutout of the Jupiter Hammerheads Monday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
Lopez' (8-7) eight frames was a career high, as well as the team's longest outing of the year. The Galvande, Dominican Republic native allowed only three hits while striking out four. He has now notched 15 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Stone Crabs (54-57, 23-20) got on the board early when Lucius Fox drew a leadoff walk against Jupiter (57-54, 25-18) starter Pablo López (0-1). After advancing to second on a throwing error, David Olmedo-Barrera shot an RBI double down the left field line to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.
Still up by that count in the bottom of the fifth, Fox singled to center before advancing to second on a groundout. The next batter was Olmedo-Barrera, who lined a single to right to plate Fox and make it 2-0.
With Charlotte still up two in the eighth, Fox walked before Olmedo-Barrera singled to right to put runners at the corners. With two outs, Peter Maris walked to load the bases for Nate Lowe. Lowe responded by driving a bases-clearing double to left center, giving the Stone Crabs a 5-0 lead.
Reece Karalus worked a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.
Responsible for all five RBIs on the night, Lowe and Olmedo-Barrera continued their successful starts to August. Lowe is 9-for-19 (.474) with four extra-base hits and five walks. Olmedo-Barrera has started the month 12-for-22 (.545) with four extra-base hits and four RBI.
The Stone Crabs will go for the series victory Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Brandon Lawson (4-4, 4.10) makes the start for Charlotte against Merandy Gonzalez (4-2, 1.96) of Jupiter. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
