PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 26, 2017) - Brandon Lowe's tenth inning walk-off double sent the Charlotte Stone Crabs home 13-12 winners over the Dunedin Blue Jays Wednesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
The 25 combined runs set a Stone Crabs' franchise record for a single game. The previous record was set earlier this season, when Charlotte beat St. Lucie 13-10 on June 22. The previous high was recorded on April 26, 2011, when the Stone Crabs lost to Fort Myers 12-10.
Seven Stone Crabs (42-58, 17-15) batters picked up multiple hits as Charlotte completed their largest comeback win of the year.
With the Crabs down 12-11 entering the bottom of the tenth, Thomas Milone walked with one out against Blue Jays (52-50, 18-15) reliever Zach Jackson (1-2). Peter Maris followed by pulling a base hit to right to push Milone to third. Angel Moreno then rolled a grounder to shortstop, allowing Milone to score on the putout and tie the game at 12. With the potential winning run at second and two outs, Dunedin turned to relief pitcher Jackson McClellan. On his first pitch, Lowe lined an opposite field double to the corner to plate Maris and win the game 13-12.
After surrendering the lead on a D.J. Davis sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth, Stone Crabs reliever Fernando Baez (1-0) got the win in his High-A debut.
The Blue Jays got the scoring going in the top of the second. With a man on and two outs, Davis doubled off the wall to give Dunedin the lead before Cavan Biggio cranked a three-run home run to right center to post a 4-0 advantage.
After a Ryan Boldt walk began the bottom of the second, Alec Sole connected on a two-run shot to right, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Charlotte starter Tyler Brashears worked a scoreless third before allowing three straight hits to begin the fourth. RBI hits from Bo Bichette and Max Pentecost extended the Dunedin lead to 8-2. Brashears allowed seven runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings.
Trailing by six in the bottom of the fourth, Lucius Fox and Nate Lowe both singled with one out. Milone then grounded into a force out, plating Fox and cutting the deficit to 8-3.
With the Stone Crabs still down by that count in the fifth, Moreno and Lowe both singled against Dunedin starter Conor Fisk. Brett Sullivan followed by pulling a double off the wall in right to score Moreno and make it 8-4. Boldt then yanked a double to the corner to score both runners and bring the tally to 8-6. With Boldt at second, Sole sliced a triple to the left field corner to bring the Stone Crabs to within 8-7. After a pitching change, Fox flew out to left to plate Sole and tie the game at eight.
After the Blue Jays re-gained the lead on an error in the top of the sixth, Maris and Moreno both singled to start the bottom of the inning. After a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third with two outs, Boldt lined a single to right to give Charlotte a 10-9 lead. Two batters later, Fox reached on an infield single to score Boldt and extend the Stone Crabs lead to 11-9.
The Stone Crabs bullpen coughed up singular runs in the seventh and eighth to send the game to extra innings, before Lowe's heroics in the tenth sealed the win.
After taking the first two games of the series, the Stone Crabs look to clinch the series at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday. Travis Ott (3-1, 3.35) makes the start for Charlotte against Tayler Saucedo (0-0, 4.05) of Dunedin. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
