BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Mississippi Braves (52-62, 23-22) scored seven runs in the final two innings, but the late offense came up short in an 11-7 loss against the Birmingham Barons (52-63, 21-25) in the series opener on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
The Barons began “Project Birmingham”, bringing in several of the organization’s top prospects from High-A Winston Salem and Single-A Kannapolis to close out the season with a revolving door of players getting Double-A playing time. The project started strongly. Birmingham pounded out 18 hits and three home runs in the win.
RHP Allan Winans gave up seven runs, just three earned, over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five with no walks. He ran into some tough luck with soft contact and two key defensive errors behind him.
Birmingham started the scoring with two runs in the second. In the fourth, Luis Mieses cranked a 450-foot solo homer to right field to make it 3-0.
RHP Sean Burke stumped the M-Braves. He tossed five two-hit innings in his 16th start.
The Barons extended their lead to 7-0 with four runs off five hits and an error in the sixth.
The M-Braves came to life in the eighth. After Andrew Moritz and Riley Delgado reached base, Justin Dean lasered a two-run triple to left center for the M-Braves first runs of the game. Justyn-Henry Malloy smashed an RBI double off the top of the bullpen wall in right to make it 7-3. Drew Lugbauer added a two-run base hit to cut the lead to 7-5.
Malloy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles that banged off the outfield walls in left center and right center. In 32 games, the outfielder is batting .286 with three home runs, seven doubles and 20 RBI.
Lugbauer is tied for the league lead with 24 home runs and added two RBI to move into a tie for first in the league with 68.
The Barons came right back with four runs, including two home runs, in the bottom of the eighth to jump back out to an 11-5 lead.
Delgado picked up his second hit in the ninth, and Cade Bunnell lined his first triple into the right-field corner to cut the score to 11-7. Bunnell now has a four-game hitting streak. Malloy struck out swinging to end the game.
