Manning Dominates in 2-0 Shutout

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Detroit Tigers top prospect Matt Manning tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings as the West Michigan Whitecaps beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 2-0 in six innings of a rain-shortened game Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The win marks the 90th victory of the season for the Whitecaps, a mark they hit for just the second time in West Michigan's 24-year history. The shutout stands as the 28th time the 'Caps have blanked their opponent - extending their previously established Midwest League record, and giving the Whitecaps three shutouts in their last four games.
The scoring was brief on Saturday, as the Whitecaps plated the only two runs of the contest in the first inning. Cole Bauml sent Danny Woodrow home from third base on a groundout to give the team its first run before Danny Pinero scored Daz Cameron with a run-scoring single to extend the lead to 2-0.
From that point on, Manning cruised through five innings of scoreless baseball, holding the TinCaps to just two hits and two walks while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts. It was the second time in Manning's career to hit the mark, and the first since June 20 as a member of the Connecticut Tigers.
Manning (2-0) picks up his second straight win, while TinCaps starter Adrian Morejon (1-2) gave up both Whitecaps runs in five innings to suffer his second loss of 2017. Brandyn Sittinger pitched a scoreless sixth inning to tally his first save as a Whitecap. The Whitecaps improve to 45-22 in the second half, and a season best 90-44 overall in 2017. The TinCaps fall to 41-27 in the back half of 2017, while holding an overall mark of 67-71. Danny Woodrow went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the 'Caps offense, and newly added outfielder Daz Cameron walked and struck out twice in his West Michigan debut.
