JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Miami Marlins have announced that left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo has been assigned to Jacksonville to continue an injury rehabilitation assignment. Luzardo is expected to pitch for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Charlotte Knights in the first game of their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. from 121 Financial Ballpark.
Luzardo was placed on the 15-day IL on May 15 due to a left forearm strain. He was then transferred to the 60-day IL on June 15. Thus far in 2022, he’s gone 2-3 in five starts with the Miami Marlins, holding a 4.03 ERA and yielding 14 earned runs in 29.0 innings. He began his rehab assignment on July 16 with a 3.0-inning stint for Low-A Jupiter.
Originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the third round of the 2016 draft, Luzardo became the first Peruvian-born player picked by an MLB team since at least 1990. When he debuted with the Nationals in 2016, Luzardo became the first Peruvian-born player to appear in the major leagues.
Luzardo was traded on July 16, 2017 to the Oakland Athletics in a deal that sent LHP Sean Doolittle and RHP Ryan Madson to Washington D.C. He played with the Athletics and its affiliated teams until July 28, 2021, when he was traded to the Miami Marlins for OF Starling Marte. In 14 total starts with the Marlins, he has registered a 6-8 record, 5.63 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 86.1 innings.
Luzardo is the sixth player in 2022 to join Jacksonville on a rehab assignment following LHP Richard Bleier (May 22), RHP Dylan Floro (April 30-May 9), INF/OF Brian Anderson (June 23-June 27), INF Joey Wendle (June 25-June 30), and RHP Cody Poteet (July 8-15).
