JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Miami Marlins announced Friday that right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet has been assigned to Jacksonville to continue an injury rehabilitation assignment. Poteet is expected to start for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Norfolk Tides on Friday at 7:05 p.m. from 121 Financial Ballpark.

Poteet was placed on the 15-day IL on May 29 due to an elbow injury. Thus far in 2022, Poteet has made two starts with the Miami Marlins, going 0-1 with a 2.42 ERA, yielding seven earned runs in 26.0 innings. He began his rehab assignment with Low-A Jupiter on July 4, fanning four in 2.0 innings.

A native of San Diego, Poteet first spent his time in Jacksonville in 2018 when they were members of the Double-A Southern League. In 21 starts, Poteet went 3-12, allowing 70 earned runs in 119.2 innings for an ERA of 5.26. He also tallied 99 strikeouts against 44 walks and 133 hits. He repeated the level in 2019, finishing 5-3 In 13 starts with a 2.25 ERA and yielded 23 runs on 63 hits against 58 strikeouts in 84 innings. Poteet also pitched with Triple-A Jacksonville in 2021, totaling two starts and going 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

The Marlins originally selected Poteet in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of UCLA. He spent 2015 through parts of 2021 in the club’s minor league system before making his major league debut on May 21, 2021 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In nine total starts in 2021 with the Marlins, he went 2-4 with a 3.81 ERA and allowed 24 runs on 41 hits in 56.2 innings with 52 strikeouts.

Poteet is the fifth player in 2022 to join Jacksonville on a rehab assignment, following LHP Richard Bleier (May 22), RHP Dylan Floro (April 30-May 9), third baseman Brian Anderson (June 23-June 27), and infielder Joey Wendle (June 25-June 30).
