JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Miami Marlins have announced that right-handed pitcher *Louis Head *has been assigned to Jacksonville to continue an injury rehabilitation assignment. Head is expected to pitch in relief for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Syracuse Mets starting Tuesday, July 12 at NBT Bank Stadium.
Head was placed on the 15-day IL on June 23 with a left shoulder impingement. Thus far in 2022, he has pitched in 23 games with Miami, totaling 23.2 innings while allowing 19 earned runs to the tune of a 7.23 ERA.
Originally selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 18th round in the 2012 MLB draft from Texas State, Head was acquired by the Marlins in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on November 14, 2021 for right-handed pitcher Josh Roberson. In seven minor league seasons, Head has made 321 appearances and five starts totaling 439.2 innings with a 3.56 career ERA and 466 career strikeouts against 407 hits and 158 walks.
Head made his major league debut for the Rays on April 25, 2021 against the Toronto Blue Jays, pitching one scoreless inning. His first professional strikeout was recorded the next day against the Oakland Athletics, as he punched out Stephen Piscotty in the top of the seventh.
Head comes to Jacksonville fresh off a one-inning rehab start on July 9 with the FCL Marlins. He pitched a perfect frame with two strikeouts.
Head is the sixth player in 2022 to join Jacksonville on a rehab assignment, following LHP Richard Bleier (May 22), RHP Dylan Floro (April 30-May 9), third baseman Brian Anderson (June 23-June 27), infielder Joey Wendle (June 25-June 30) and RHP Cody Poteet (July 8-present).
