ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Tower Buzzers are excited to share that right-hander Marlon Nieves has been named California League Pitcher of the Week after an outstanding showing on the mound.
Nieves, just 20 years old and from San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic, kicked off his 2026 season on April 7 and didn’t waste a moment making an impression. Facing the Inland Empire 66ers, he pitched six scoreless innings, only surrendering one hit, while striking out six and walking just one. He held opposing hitters to a .056 batting average and posted an elite 0.33 WHIP. He walked away with the win and set his expectations throughout the year extremely high.
This honor is a big statement from Nieves early in the season. He keeps building on a solid track record, already posting a 7–3 record and a 3.65 ERA in 43 minor league games (37 starts). He’s struck out 155 batters over 143 innings.
Manager John Shoemkaer and coaches have nothing but praise for Nieves, and he will be relied on heavily throughout the year.
Next up, The Tower Buzzers are back at it on April 14 when they host the Fresno Grizzlies, where Nieves is expected to make his second start of the 2026 season on April 18th.
