STATEN ISLAND--The Staten Island Yankees defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-0 to claim the final game of a three-game and six-game homestand at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Yankees got another great pitching performance, this time from Nolan Martinez who threw six shutout innings and allowed only four hits. He picked up his first professional win after Reiver Sanmartin came in to close out the game for his first save of the season. Sanmartin threw three shutout innings to close out the win.
All of the offense for the Baby Bombers came in the bottom of the fourth as Frederick Cuevas broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double. Jackson Thoreson added an RBI single to make it 2-0 and that would be all the Yankees would need. For Thoreson, it was his first professional hit and RBI in his Staten Island Yankees' debut.
The loss went to the Tri-City reliever Hansel Paulino who gave up the two Yankee runs in the fourth.
After this six-game stretch at home, the Yankees have an off day on Wednesday and then head out on the road for three in Connecticut against the Tigers and then to Brooklyn before returning home on July 2 to face the Cyclones on Staten Island.
