Krook, Wojciechowski combine for 15 strikeouts in dominant win

WORCESTER, Mass. (July 15, 2021) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders struck out a season-high 15 batters and pounded out 11 hits in an 11-3 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Friday night at Polar Park.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs against Worcester starter Kevin McCarthy. Ryan LaMarre and Greg Allen scored on Armando Alvarez’s two-run single to begin the rally, and Andrew Velazquez followed with an RBI triple. Three batters later, Estevan Florial brought in Velazquez with an infield single to run the lead to 4-0.

The RailRiders tacked on three more in the top of the third. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Allen and Alvarez and an RBI single from Velazquez gave SWB a 7-0 lead. Alvarez finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and three RBIs.

Meanwhile, Matt Krook was dealing for the RailRiders, striking out eight batters and allowing just two unearned runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. The eight punch-outs for Krook (2-1) is his highest career total in Triple-A baseball.

In the top of the sixth Scranton/WB touched up Matthew Kent for three runs on one hit, scoring runs on a Chris Gittens RBI double, a wild pitch, and a LaMarre groundout. After Worcester tallied a run against Asher Wojciechowski in the eighth, LaMarre led off the ninth with a solo home run to extend the RailRiders’ lead to 11-3.

Wojciechowski finished the game on the mound for the RailRiders, tossing the final 4.0 innings to earn his first career save. The right-hander allowed four hits and struck out seven in his outing. Krook and Wojciechowski combined for 15 strikeouts, tying a season-high set on June 6 against Syracuse.

The RailRiders continue their series with the Red Sox on Friday night at Polar Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:15 on the RailRiders Baseball Network. RHP Luis Gil (2-0, 5.32) toes the rubber for SWB, while the WooSox have not announced a starter.
