Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs exploded for six runs in the sixth inning highlighted by a Jack Lopez gran slam to defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9-4 Friday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs improved to 3-1 on the season winning their third consecutive game.

Johan Mieses homered for the second straight game in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one apiece. Roldani Baldwin and Ryan Fitzgerald followed with back-to-back doubles as Portland took a 2-1 lead.

Mieses, 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, struck again in the third delivering an RBI single to score Lopez, which gave the Sea Dogs a 3-2 lead.

The game remained tied at three until the sixth inning when Tanner Nishioka was hit by a Fitz Stadler (0-1) pitch with the bases loaded as Portland took a 4-3 lead. Lopez broke the game open by smashing a grand slam over the Maine Monster extending the Sea Dogs lead to 8-3.

Sea Dogs pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in the ballgame.

Zack Kelly (1-0) earned the win pitching three outstanding innings in relief, holding the Fisher Cats to one hit and striking out eight.

Durbin Feltman fired the final two innings holding the Fisher Cats to one run on three hits and he struck out four.

Thad Ward, the Red Sox #10 prospect according to Baseball America and the 2019 Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year got the start for the Sea Dogs. In his Double-A debut, Ward allowed three runs on six hits in four innings, walking three and recording four punchouts.

The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats will play their first day of the season on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs will send righty Kutter Crawford (0-0) to the mound. He will be opposed by New Hampshire righty Maximo Castillo (0-0). Radio coverage on the WPEI Sea Dogs Radio Network, built by General Dynamics/ Bath Iron Works, begins at 12:45 PM.
