Mayer Shines In Constellation Field Debut

Santos II Delivers Perfect Inning In Debut As Space Cowboys Split Series

RHP Bryce Mayer struck out seven in his Constellation Field debut but the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (34-17, 66-59) dropped their series finale, falling 1-0 in 10 innings to the Oklahoma City Comets (29-21, 70-54) on Sunday afternoon at Constellation Field.

Mayer made his third start in Triple A and tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while limiting the Comets to three baserunners. The righty started his day by retiring the first eight batters that he faced and did not have a base runner reach third against him during his outing.

LHP Bryan King entered with one out in the sixth and allowed a walk and a single to the first two batters he faced. King bounced back to strike out the next two batters to end the inning and keep Oklahoma City scoreless through six.

RHP Alex Santos II made his Triple-A debut in the seventh and tossed a perfect inning. Santos struck out the first batter he faced before inducing two flyouts to keep the Comets off the board.

RHP Christian Roa followed with a perfect eighth, striking out one and forcing two groundouts to keep the shutout alive. In the bottom of the eighth, Collin Price collected his second hit of the game and stole second to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. However, RHP Blake Treinen struck out the next two batters to end the inning holding Sugar Land scoreless.

RHP Roddery Muñoz entered for the ninth and allowed a leadoff single before retiring three straight to keep the game scoreless. Sugar Land was unable to break through in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extras.

Matt Gorski opened the top of the 10th with a single to score the first run of the game and give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead. After allowing the leadoff single, RHP Michael Knorr prompted a groundout and two flyouts to limit the Comets to one run and end the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Price and Braden Shewmake worked back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for the Space Cowboys. However, RHP Seth Halvorsen recorded a strikeout to end the game and hand the Space Cowboys their first shutout of the second half.

NOTABLE:

  • RHP Bryce Mayer struck out seven in his first appearance at Constellation Field on Sunday afternoon. It marked Mayer’s Triple-A high in strikeouts and was his first outing with at least seven strikeouts since August 1 when he struck out nine of 6.0 shutout innings with Corpus Christi against Frisco.
  • LHP Bryan King made his second appearance with the Space Cowboys this season on Sunday afternoon. King has not allowed a run with Sugar Land, tossing 1.2 innings while allowing one hit, two walks and striking out three.
  • RHP Alex Santos II made his Triple-A debut on Sunday afternoon after being promoted to Sugar Land on Saturday. Santos struck out the first batter he faced en route to tossing a perfect seventh inning.
  • Collin Price went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in Sunday’s series finale, marking back-to-back multi-hit games for Price.
  • RHP Christian Roa tossed a perfect eighth inning on Sunday afternoon. Since re-signing with Houston on a minor league deal, Roa has not allowed a run in 13 of his 16 appearances.
  • Sunday afternoon’s extra-inning game marked the 18th extra-inning game of the season for Sugar Land, which leads the Pacific Coast League. El Paso is next with 12.

Coming off of a series split the Space Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas after an off day on Monday for a six-game set against the Aviators. Both teams have not yet announced a starter for Tuesday’s series opener with first pitch scheduled for 9:05 pm CT.
