PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 27, 2018) - Brendan McKay homered twice and Blake Bivens led a four-hit shutout as the Stone Crabs silenced the St. Lucie Mets 6-0 Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
It was McKay's first multi-home run performance as a professional. Both home runs were two-run shots to right against St. Lucie (40-60, 13-20) starter Blake Taylor (1-5).
Charlotte (52-47, 18-14) starter Blake Bivens needed only 72 pitches to turn in a season-high seven scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out five.
The Stone Crabs got the scoring going in the top of the second. Rene Pinto walked and then moved to third on a throwing error. The next batter was Jake Fraley , who drove home Pinto with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.
McKay then took over, hitting his two home runs in consecutive innings to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Charlotte added an additional run in the sixth on a Jake Fraley solo home run to right.
Friday's win was the Stone Crabs' eighth shutout of the year. They'll look to clinch at least a split of the four-game series at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Kenny Rosenberg (8-1, 4.08) makes the start for Charlotte against Gabriel Llanes (4-9, 4.55) of St. Lucie. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
