Mears Leaves the Yard as Missions Comeback Attempt Falls Short

SAN ANTONIO – It was Star Wars Night at Nelson Wolff Stadium and the Missions took the field wearing Star Wars themed jerseys. These jerseys were auctioned off with the proceeds benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association. After trailing early on, the Missions continued to battle back against the Midland RockHounds. San Antonio pulled within one run after a Joshua Mears two-run homer. However, the Midland bullpen stopped the comeback attempt to clinch a 5-4 victory.
Ben Krauth was the starting pitcher for the Missions. He allowed a leadoff double to Chase Calabuig to begin the game. The southpaw left him stranded at second base after striking out the next two batters and inducing a fly out.
Midland scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second inning. Logan Davidson reached on a throwing error to start the inning. Krauth issued a walk to Brett Harris before retiring the next two batters. With runners on the corners and two outs, Michael Guldberg hit a single to drive in Davidson. After issuing a walk to Calabuig, Zack Gelof drove in a run with a base hit to left field. Midland took a 2-0 lead.
The RockHounds added a run in the top of the third inning. Down 0-2 in the count, JJ Schwarz hit a leadoff home run to left field. His seventh long ball of the season made it a 3-0 ballgame.
Colin Peluse was the starting pitcher for the RockHounds. He cruised through the first two innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ethan Skender hit a one-out double and placed himself in scoring position. Tirso Ornelas drove him in with a double to left field. Juan Fernandez scored Ornelas with a single to left field. San Antonio trailed 3-2.
Midland used the long ball to increase their lead in the top of the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Krauth issued a walk to Calabuig. Gelof hit a two-run home run to left field to make it a 5-2 lead. This was his 12th long ball of the season.
San Antonio had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth inning. Skender began the inning by reaching base on a walk and then stole second base. He was left stranded at second base following a strikeout, a fly out and a ground out.
The Missions used the long ball to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Webster Rivas reached base with a one-out single. After recording the second out of the inning, Joshua Mears hit a two-run home run to left-center field. His second Double-A long ball made it a 5-4 ballgame.
San Antonio had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Facing Charles Hall, Mears drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Ripken Reyes. The Missions outfielder advanced to third base after a ground out from Skender. Leyba drew a walk to extend the inning and put the winning run on first base. However, Ornelas struck out looking to end the game.

Left-hander David Leal (4-5, 4.85) is scheduled to start for the RockHounds. First pitch is expected at 6:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
