FRISCO – The Houston Astros have named right-hander Jaime Melendez as their minor league pitcher of the month for June.

Melendez posted a 2.01 ERA over five games (4 starts) last month, striking out 31 against nine walks and 11 hits in 22 1/3 innings. His June resume includes a 0.90 WHIP and .145 opponent batting average.

The 20-year-old from Puebla, Mexico finished the month by striking out a career-best 12 batters in a five-inning performance June 25 opposite Amarillo. It marked the most strikeouts by a Hooks pitcher since Enoli Paredes punched out 12 Midland RockHounds in six innings July 5, 2019 at Whataburger Field.

Melendez, who blanked the Springfield Cardinals over four hitless innings June 19, has allowed three combined runs in his last four assignments, spanning 18 2/3 frames.

Hooks hurlers tied San Antonio for the best June ERA in the Texas League at 3.84.

This is the second Astros monthly award by a Corpus Christi Hook, as Enmanuel Valdez took home top player honors in April.
