Meyers and Bigbie Power Erie to Seventh Straight Win

The SeaWolves (30-14) became the first team in Double-A to cross the 30-win threshold when they beat Hartford (21-22) 5-3 on Saturday. It was Erie’s seventh straight win.

Hartford got off to a quick start against Erie starter Jaden Hamm. After Cole Carrigg’s leadoff single, Jose Torres slugged a two-run homer to give Hartford an instant 2-0 lead.

Erie broke even in the bottom of the second against Yard Goats starter Gabriel Hughes. With Carlos Mendoza on first following a single, Chris Meyers slammed a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2. It was Meyers’ first homer of the season.

In the fourth, Mendoza walked and was at second base with two out when Meyers lined a single to center which scored Mendoza and gave Erie a 3-2 lead.

Hamm went five innings for Erie, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Richard Guasch made his SeaWolves debut out of the bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

In the eighth, Hartford tied the game against Matt Merrill. Benny Montgomery walked to start the inning and went to third on Juan Guerrero’s single. Dyan Jorge’s sacrifice fly scored Montgomery to make it 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Erie regained the lead against Victor Juarez. Max Anderson extended his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest streak so far in the Eastern League this season, with a one-out single. With two out, Justice Bigbie drove a double to score Anderson and give Erie a 4-3 lead. Mendoza’s third hit of the game scored Bigbie to make it 5-3.

Merrill (1-2) recorded the win over Juarez (2-1). RJ Petit secured his first save of the season by stranding a pair of runners in the ninth.

Erie and Hartford conclude the series at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday as Carlos Peña faces Sean Sullivan.
