The Lookouts may have provided the postgame fireworks on Friday, but Nick Gordon has been providing a spark all season.
The top Twins prospect went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Double-A Chattanooga to an 8-1 triumph over Pensacola at AT&T Field.
Box score
Gordon is 9-for-25 during a five-game hitting streak, has five hits in his last two contests and ranks third in the Southern League with a .340 average in 25 games in his first Double-A season.
"Nick's always been confident and had a good feel for the game," Mauer told MiLB.com earlier this week. "He still needs to get stronger, which he will, but I think he's just a little more comfortable with everything now. He's off to a really good start, and I just see him continuing on."
After flying out in the first inning, MLB.com's No. 44 overall prospect got to work in the second when he came up with two on and two out. The 21-year-old slapped an RBI single to right field that produced another run on an error by right fielder Aristedes Aquino.
As the Lookouts kept hitting, Gordon got his third opportunity in as many innings. The fifth overall pick in the 2014 Draft knocked a first-pitch double to center for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. He added an RBI double in the seventh to cap his big night.
Hitting one spot behind Gordon,
"It's fun," Gordon told MiLB.com of his fellow middle infielder. "I've learned from him and I think he's learned from me as well. We push each other, and I think we've definitely developed some chemistry, no matter which side we're on. I don't think it's really been that hard for either of us to switch. We both have a lot of fun on the field."
