Missed chances cost Squirrels in 4-2 loss to Patriots

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels lost to the Somerset Patriots, 4-2, on Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark.
The Flying Squirrels (58-39, 15-14 second half) outhit the Patriots (52-47, 15-15) but went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners on base.

Richmond opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Trevor Cohen led off with a single and later came in to score on a single by Jancel Villarroel against Somerset starter Xavier Rivas (Win, 6-4). Rivas finished his outing with one unearned run allowed over six innings.
Somerset tied the score with a two-out double by Tomas Frick in the bottom of the second and took a 2-1 lead later in the inning with an RBI single by Kevin Verde against Richmond starter Yunior Marte (Loss, 0-4).
The Patriots scored on a double steal in the fifth and Verde hit a solo homer in the seventh to open a 4-1 lead.
The Flying Squirrels scored a run on an error in the top of the ninth but Trent Sellers (Save, 2) worked a groundout to strand two runners on base.
The series continues on Friday night. Left-hander Charlie McDaniel (3-1, 4.44) will start for Richmond opposed by Somerset right-hander Rory Fox in his Double-A debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark.
