PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (May 10, 2019) - Stone Crabs starting pitcher Tobias Myers turned in a season-high 6.2 innings of quality work to lead Charlotte to a 3-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets Friday night at First Data Field.
Myers (2-1) allowed three hits in the first two innings but settled down to retire 16 of the next 17 batters in his longest outing of the year.
The Mets got the scoring going in the bottom of the first on a Carlos Cortes home run, which gave St. Lucie a 1-0 lead.
Both teams traded zeroes until the top of the fifth. After Mets starter Tony Dibrell (3-2) walked two Stone Crabs, Seaver Whalen pulled a base hit to left to score Jim Haley and tie the game 1-1.
With things still tied in the top of the sixth, Ronaldo Hernandez reached base on a fielding error. After he stole second, Dibrell struck out the next two batters. With two outs, Carl Chester lined a base hit over shortstop to chase home Hernandez and give Charlotte a 2-1 lead.
Still leading by that total in the top of the ninth, Whalen reached on an error with one out. Two batters later, Hernandez lined a double down the left field line to score Whalen and make it 3-1.
Hernandez has now recorded three straight games with multiple hits, raising his batting average from .188 to .231 for the season.
Chandler Raiden and Mikey York combined to pick up the final seven outs, allowing just one hit. York notched his third save of the season.
The Stone Crabs will go for their second sweep of the season at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Coverage of the series finale with St. Lucie begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
