Bridgewater, New Jersey – On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the New York Black Yankees came to town. The Somerset Patriots rebranded as the New York Black Yankees as part of an annual community program to pay tribute to the historic Negro Leagues team.

One of the main highlights of the event at TD Bank Ballpark was appearances by two Negro Leagues players – James Cobbin and Dennis Biddle. Both were honored on the field during the pre-game ceremony that including a moderated Q&A, presentation of New York Black Yankees jerseys and ceremonial first pitches. During the game, both Cobbin and Biddle met fans on the main concourse to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

What made the appearance even more special was that Cobbin played for the New York Black Yankees and was given the jersey of the team he played for that never had a logo or branding of their own until created by the Patriots in 2024. Somerset’s Co-Chairman Jonathan Kalafer put the jersey on Cobbin in an unforgettable moment for all involved.

Cobbin played third base, shortstop, and centerfield during his baseball tenure with the Black Yankees and Indianapolis Clowns in 1956 and 1957. He had a lifetime batting average of .317 and hit 38 home runs. He was also known for his exceptional speed on the base paths, earning him the nickname "The Thief" after stealing 49 bases during his time in the league.

In 1958, Cobbin was drafted to the U.S. Army, where he continued to play baseball and won the 1959 USAREUR World Series. Cobbin's legacy continues to inspire, highlighting both his athletic achievements and his contributions to civil rights and historical preservation.

The Patriots will once again play in tribute to the New York Black Yankees on Saturday, August 1 for the 7:05 pm game at TD Bank Ballpark versus the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The game will include a special pre-game ceremony, giveaways, displays, performance and postgame fireworks. More details about the event and community efforts coming soon.
