LANSING, Mich. – Right-hander Gunnar Hoglund struck out seven Dayton Dragons in five hitless innings on Saturday night at Day Air Ballpark in an impressive Midwest League debut. On Monday, he was recognized for his effort as the Midwest League’s Pitcher of the Week.

Hoglund, 23, was originally drafted 19th overall in 2021 by the Toronto Blue Jays from Ole Miss and then traded to the Oakland Athletics as part of a four-player package for Matt Chapman on March 16, 2022.

The No. 19 prospect in the A’s system and the No. 7 pitching prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, Hoglund lived up to expectations in his first High-A start after being called up from Single-A Stockton. The native of Dunedin, Fla., needed only 64 pitches (43 strikes) to work five masterful innings in the Lugnuts’ 3-2 win, part of Lansing’s series victory at Dayton. Hoglund allowed only one Dragons base runner to reach, a Trey Faltine two-out HBP in the third inning.

Hoglund becomes the third Lugnut honored with a weekly award this year, joining Blake Beers (Pitcher of the Week, May 9-14) and Danny Bautista, Jr. (Player of the Week, July 25-30).

The Lugnuts (25-29, 56-63) return to action for the final homestand of the 2023 season, welcoming in the West Michigan Whitecaps from August 29 through September 3. Tickets are available at the stadium box office on Michigan Ave., via lansinglugnuts.com or by calling (517) 485-4500.
