BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (58-62, 23-32) and Knoxville Smokies (66-57, 28-26) were knotted through eight innings before the Smokies struck for two runs in the ninth to earn a 3-1 victory at Keesler Federal Park on Friday evening. Despite the loss, Dylan O’Rae swiped his 53rd base of the season, setting the single-season franchise record, previously held by Johnny Davis who stole 52 in 2017. O’Rae’s 53 stolen bases represent the most in a season by a Brewers Double-A player since Dee Dixon (53) did it in 1990 with the El Paso Diablos.
The Smokies broke the seal on the ballgame on their first hit of the game, which came in the fourth in the form of a solo home run off the bat of Ariel Armas for his sixth homer of the season. Darrien Miller deadlocked the game an inning later in the fifth with a dinger of his own, 103 mph off the bat, traveling 365 feet. The two teams stayed tied until Andy Garriola got a 2-RBI single in the ninth to make it 3-1.
Frankie Scalzo Jr. was the winning pitcher, while Jesús Broca (3-6) was given the loss, and Tyler Ras recorded the five-pitch save. Broca (1.0, 0er) along with Anthony Flores (0.2ip, 0er) and Edwin Jimenez (2.2ip, 0er, 3k) out of the Shuckers bullpen did not allow an earned run in relief.
